The Rotary Club of Vancouver supports many Youth Programs including Interact, Rotaract and RYLA. The Club also sponsors 2 secondary school scholarships per year to assist students in reaching post secondary education.

The Youth Committee creates awareness of Rotary by providing young people with opportunities to attend Rotary sponsored programs where they work together, enhance their knowledge and skills and personal development.  Click here for more information.

In 2005, the Committee launched its much-anticipated Stay in School Scholarship Program. Each year, this program will award scholarships of $7,000 to two deserving students entering Grade 10 at Gladstone Secondary School.


Updates from Youth Committee Board Meeting Chair Mr. Terry Gunderson, April 2012

• Rotaract Club of Vancouver (meets at UBC): held successful events at Kiwassa Neighbourhood House for Halloween and Christmas, arranged a Professional

 

• Development day in February for secondary school students, with two speakers from our Rotary Club, Paul Martin and Theodor Tonca, is planning another international project this year in the summer, in Thailand, if the air fares are reasonable.

 

• Youth exchange: Steffen Scherer from Moers, Germany, will complete his exchange program in June.

 

• The outgoing exchange student, Adam Muir, is in Mexico.

 

• RYLA South:Our club sponsored two students from Burns Lake to attend the very successful RYLA South conference held at Camp Jubilee in the Indian Arm of Burrard Inlet.

 

• The attendance for the conference in late March 2012 was about 100 students, which was a new record for attendance.

 

• Stay in School Program:I have attached John Bathurst’s earlier summary report. Two students selected for a total of $14,000 in scholarships.

 

• Adventures in Citizenship.Doug Bevan and Don Kavanagh arranged for two students to fly to Ottawa in early April to attend the Adventures in Citizenship program.

 

• They have been asked to speak at our Rotary Club meeting about their experiences in Ottawa. Interact Club:Unable to start a new club this year.

 

• Short term exchange program (STEP):Last summer two students, one from Delta and one from Spain, gave a talk to our Rotary Club about their experiences.
